Canada in 2026: study permit, PGWP and Express Entry changes for Nigerians
2026-10-24
New proof-of-funds amount, the end of the Nigeria Student Express, PAL rules, PGWP language tests, 2026 Express Entry categories and PR fees, in one place.
Studying in Canada
Proof of funds: CAD 23,448 for living costs for study permit applications from 1 September 2026 (it was CAD 22,895 before that), on top of your first-year tuition.
The Nigeria Student Express and Student Direct Stream ended on 8 November 2024. A GIC is no longer compulsory, but it is still the strongest proof of funds most Nigerian applicants can give.
Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL): undergraduate and college students need one from the province, requested by the school. From 1 January 2026 most master's and PhD students at public universities are exempt from the PAL and the study permit cap.
Upfront medical exam: Nigerians coming for more than 6 months must do an immigration medical exam with an IRCC-approved panel physician before applying.
Spouses: since January 2025 an open work permit for a student's spouse is limited to master's programs of 16 months or longer, doctoral programs and a few professional degrees.
Working after you graduate (PGWP)
You must apply within 180 days of graduating. Degree graduates need CLB 7 English (or NCLC 7 French) in all four skills; college and non-university graduates need CLB 5 and an eligible field of study. Master's programs of at least 8 months can lead to a 3-year PGWP.
Work done while you are a full-time student does not count toward the Canadian Experience Class. Your PR clock starts when you begin skilled work after graduating.
Express Entry in 2026
You have 60 days to submit your application after an Invitation to Apply.
Job offers no longer add CRS points (removed 25 March 2025).
2026 categories: French-language proficiency, healthcare and social services, trades, education, and STEM, plus new categories for doctors, researchers and senior managers with Canadian work experience, and transport occupations. Each occupation category now needs at least 1 year of work experience in the last 3 years.
Settlement funds (Federal Skilled Worker): CAD 15,263 for one person, CAD 19,001 for two, CAD 23,360 for three, CAD 28,362 for four. Canadian Experience Class applicants are exempt.
PR fees from 30 April 2026: CAD 990 processing fee plus CAD 600 Right of Permanent Residence Fee — CAD 1,590 for the main applicant.
Visiting Canada
Multiple-entry 10-year visas are no longer the default; officers decide single or multiple entry case by case. Visitors can no longer apply for a work permit from inside Canada (that policy ended 28 August 2024). Parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents can use the Super Visa, which allows stays of up to 5 years at a time.
